Backyard Portraits // Home

A few portraits of my sweet sweet mama - I took a few others on the Hasselblad from this same session, but have not had the chance to scan the negatives to get a few up on the web.  The light in our backyard is always amazing, and those peonies! My goodness -- swoon... Someday I will have a garden, until then however, I will have to be content with little succulents on the aft deck!

The light specific to 'in between' spaces is amazing.  I always look for doors, open hallways, or spaces that have a clearly definitive light and dark area.  I like to play with placing the subject in the light or in the dark.  Here my lovely mama is stepping indoors, so she is backlit, but I over exposed a few stops so while her hair is very light, I still held onto the backyard.

One of things I love about photographing people is that you call just about anything a portrait - it can be just the hands, or just jewelry, you don't even need to see the face!  A portrait is to capture some sort of that person, some aspect of their 'ness,' whether it's in the expression, the movements, or the smile, you are getting just a piece of who they are.
